Truffle-hunting in the Luberon. Our 30-acre estate has four truffieres with more than 600 individual oak trees. The truffieres were planted about 20 years ago and produce black Perigords, the traditional truffle of southern France. The truffle season in Provence runs from November to February and our house is available for rent throughout that period.

There are four ways to find truffles. You can use your pig or a dog to sniff them out. Or you can pass a stick over the ground to flush out the small fly that co-habits with the truffle on the root of the oak. If they fail you, you can find them at the market. We can help you with two of the four.

We will arrange for a trufficulteur, or “a man and his dogs”, to join you on your truffle hunt. It is no easy business finding truffles. After just one hunt, it becomes quite clear why truffles cost as much as they do. But our land has a good yield and while we can’t  absolutely guarantee you will be successful, the thrill of unearthing a truffle is certainly worth the effort of trying. A minimum of two hours should be set aside for the search.

Alternatively, if you wish to buy truffles, they are almost always available for sale at the local markets held daily in the surrounding villages. And during truffle season, a special truffle market is held in Carpentras, a large village about 40 minutes from the house. This is well worth a visit.

Whether you find truffles on our land or not, we can also provide you with details of good local restaurants where you can enjoy fresh truffles prepared by Provencal cooks.
