BY RAIL: Eurostar has daily services from London to Avignon, Aix, and Marseille -- a journey of about 7 hours that includes a change in Lille.  From  Paris, the journey time is 2 hours, 40 minutes on the TGV. See Rail Europe or Eurostar for details.

LONDON-AIX SUN TRAIN: Like the special ski trains in the winter, Eurostar has one train a week that takes you direct virtually without stops from London's Waterloo station to Avignon. By far the easiest of the journeys to the house from London is Eurostar's Direct Avignon service, which has operated for the past several years on Saturdays between July and September. See Rail Europe for details.

BY AIR:  The villa is a one-hour drive from Marseille's Marignane airport. From London, the airport is served by British Airways , Easyjet and Ryanair. Car rentals at Marignane include Avis,  EuroDollar, Europcar, and Hertz, which can be booked directly from the Ryanair website. From Ryanair's Stansted-Nimes destination, the villa is under  2 hours by car. Ryanair has a partnership with Hertz at Nimes airport. If your are renting a car from Herzt, make sure on your return journey that stop at the first Arles exit to get petrol. Once you have left Arles, there are no petrol stations before the airport.

BY CAR:    The journey time from London  to Provence, including a crossing through the Eurotunnel, is 14 to 15 hours. See Eurotunnel for details.  The AA puts the driving time from Calais to Aix, a distance of 1,100 kilometers,  at 10 hours, 23 minutes. For route planning, try Michelin.

Don't forget to tell your insurance company that you'll be driving abroad.

There's also the  alternative of  putting your car on a train once you get to Calais. For details, see French Motorail
